Millenial Clients? Be Sure to Praise Them

Did you catch the 60 Minutes segment last Sunday May 25 about the Millenials in the workplace? This generation, born between 1980 and 1995, is 80 million strong...and boy do they have different needs than the Boomers or Gen X'ers in the workplace!

They thrive on praise, and have little patience for "paying their dues." After all, they think, look what that did for my parents? They got laid off or shortchanged anyway! Today's Boomer managers need to learn new leadership skills for this generation...since they are rapidly passing the reins to them as the Boomers reach retirement age! They are tech savvy, they are adventurous...but as trainer Mary Crane puts it, "They have climbed Mount Everest. They've been down to Machu Picchu to help excavate it. But they've never punched a time clock. They have no idea what it's like to actually be in an office at nine o'clock, with people handing them work."

What is most interesting about the Millennials is that they want many of the same things other generations want at work...but never knew (or thought) to ask. Come on, who doesn't want to be recognized for doing good work?Even Baby Boomers wanted some kind of "balance," but we didn't know it was possible--our generation (and those who ran the organizations) thought that it had to be one or the other: success at work or a home life. And, for women, the answer was to be Superwoman: bring home the bacon, fry it up in the pan and smile all the while!

Baby Boomers have raised this youngest generation to go after what they want and to believe they can achieve--so why should they do things differently? Each generation goes after those things that are in its generational values and the Millennial generation is no different. As parents, we taught them to go after things their way...and helped them do so. And now, we want them to be different? Seems more than a little hypocritical...

Since this is the generation that will be filling shoes as BBs age, it makes a whole lot of sense for the older workers to mentor the younger. But, the differences appear to be more than the Boomers can deal with...most have no tolerance for differences! It seems that BB set the rules and we want to keep them as they are.

Coaching and mentoring are skills badly needed by almost every organization today--but I sadly see very few organizations taking the time to value these skills or to make any investment in them. Maybe as career coaches increase in numbers, we can help organizations make the tremendous shifts needed for successful 21st century businesses!
