Efficiency Breeds Performance Improvement

We are delighted to spotlight Wendy Enelow in today's blog!

Efficiency Breeds Performance Improvement

Managing your job search is just like managing any other project and business. You must create an administrative infrastructure that will allow you to operate efficiently, productively, and with some order to it all. Helter skelter doesn’t work for anything you do, and particularly not your job search.

Following are some strategies you might consider as you create a system to manage the flow of contacts, resumes, follow-ups, interviews, and more that you’ll need to “administer” throughout your search campaign.

Technology is NOT the answer to everything, albeit an essential and tremendously valuable tool in your job search. In fact, conducting a job search without technology is virtually impossible in today’s virtual market. However, not everything has to be automated.

Create two working spaces within the same room. I use two desks - one’s my PC desk for all my writing, email, Internet research, etc. The other desk is where I talk on the phone, write notes, keep important files and do administrative tasks. The desks are side-by-side, so I can easily reach from one to the other, but they are separate and distinct workstations. It allows me to keep all the “stuff” I need to do on my PC separate from the “stuff” I need to do at my desk. Each desk has a priority pile of items that must be addressed immediately (along with lots of other to-do piles that are not as time-sensitive).

Establish a schedule.. Attempt to set aside quiet times each day to attend to whatever writing tasks you may have. I guarantee that your productivity will increase dramatically. However, remember that flexibility is vital. If you’ve established 3 pm-5 pm as your designated writing time, yet you’re invited for an interview at 4 pm, I recommend you accept the invitation!

Prioritize your incoming email into three categories. First, I immediately delete all the unsolicited emails. I then respond to those messages that will take under a minute or two to handle, and then work my way through the balance that require more than a quick thought. I figure for every 25 messages I receive, I handle better than 70% of them within less than 10 minutes.

Touch it only once. Whether we’re talking about each day’s snail mail, your email, or folders on your desk, do something with it NOW and be done with it. The less frequently you touch each piece of paper, or the less time you procrastinate about something you don’t want to complete but will only take 30 minutes, the more efficiently you will be managing your entire campaign.

You probably have already developed some job search management strategies that work best for you. Try integrating some of the above into what you’ve already created and you’ll find that your search campaign will proceed even more efficiently. And, the faster you move forward, the faster and easier you’ll find your next opportunity.

The Secret Controversy - Part 2

Part 2:

We are delighted to spotlight Elyse Hope Killoran with the second
excerpt from her newsletter regarding the controversy surrounding The
Secret.

Be sure to visit:

http://www.choosingprosperity.com/archive/pftio030807.htm
to read the full article!

The article that I wrote on the topic of the controversy around 'The
Secret' ('The Secret Controversy Heats Up
http://choosingprosperity.typepad.com/blog/2007/03/the_secret_cont.html ')
clearly struck a nerve.

The general message was:

"I thank you for these newsletters that you generate and appreciate
the work you are doing. I feel I must however, step in and comment on
your choice for discussing the 'controversy".

"We know that what we focus on grows - what we give attention to
becomes larger. Why then are you giving any 'air time' to the controversy? "

For me, dear readers, this query highlights the exact reason that I am
choosing to move into the 'controversy' instead of avoiding it.

It is true that, once we understand the law of attraction and how it
works in our lives, we find that we must become very selective in our attention.

As we look upon things that make us feel good, we strengthen our bond
to them, and as we look upon things that make us feel bad we similarly
strengthen our bond with those things as well.

The key to understanding how this all works on a very practical level
lies not in 'what' we are looking at, but rather, in how we are
'feeling' as we do the looking. Therefore, while I do agree that what we focus
on expands, I do not agree with the implied corollary, that what we 'avoid'
looking at will disappear.

If we see something that is not pleasing to us and which activates an
emotion within us and we elect to turn our heads away and say, 'no, I
do not want that' we have activated the energy nonetheless.

Whether we are facing it or looking away, if we feel upset, angry,
dismayed or otherwise disempowered by a topic, pretending that it is
not there is like spreading pink paint over a situation - it pretties
it up but does no logical good.

Therefore, being aware that a 'controversy' is brewing, and wanting to
hide out until it blows over is not, for me, the most empowered,
deliberate response.

The Secret Controversy -Part 1

We are delighted to spotlight Elyse Hope Killoran for a two part blog.

The following is an excerpt from her newsletter regarding the controversy surrounding The Secret. Part 1:

The Secret: Against...
While Oprah Winfrey expressed open-hearted appreciation of the content, other mainstream media outlets have been racing to express their condemnation and disdain.

The Experiments...
While I have long proposed an experimental approach to help people challenge their disbelief, in my case I have always advocated orchestrating conditions and inviting "the truth to reveal itself to you." My most well-known "experiments" include:

1) my initial personal experiment - which provided me with enough evidence that I was able to put my skeptical self 'on hold' for the past 7 years and which freed me to create an extraordinary life (you can catch a glimpse of my back story and my original manifestation experiment at:

http://www.choosingprosperity.com/mystory1.htm )

2) the grand group experiment that we did last May where hundreds of participants self-reported significant shifts in their perspectives as a result of their personal experiences (statistical data and participant reports can be found here:

http://choosingprosperity.com/results.htm

We can also find a wave of "so-called" scientific experiments popping up all over the Internet that are coming from an entirely different angle. These experimenters clearly state that their intention is to disprove the existence of the law of attraction.

Unfortunately, these "experiments" are fatally flawed from the start. If the "experimenters" understood the nature of the scientific method and/or the scientifically validated phenomenon of the "observer effect" they would know that a) one can't use the scientific methods to 'disprove' anything and b) once you announce that you are expecting a particular result, you have automatically invalidated your research.

What is going on? So why the powerful backlash?

More Intro. Sessions = More Coaching Clients Part 2

As promised - here is part two from Christian Mickelsen! Remember, you can hear
more from Christian at the 2nd Annual International Association of Career Coaches
Telesummit!
http://www.iaccweb.org/telesummit2007/invite.html

BOTTOM LINE:
Get out there and get intro. session with people and you'll start getting a
lot more clients!

*******************************************
*Free Sessions That Sell: Client Enrollment System!*

Every "Sample Session" or "Free Session" you do is a chance to get another
coaching client. Are some great potential clients slipping through your
fingers because your current "free session" process simply doesn't lead
enough people to hiring you? Now you can...

Discover how to:
* Turn your offer for a free session into an "Irresistible
Offer" that people are hungry to take you up on (so you
get more potential clients to have a free session with you).

* Find out what your potential clients want at the
deepest levels (so they are more likely to want to
hire you, and so you'll be able to coach them better).

* Create a "coaching plan" for your clients so that
your potential clients know what you'll be working
on during your work together (this will make them
better understand coaching AND what they'll get out
of working with you SO THAT they are more likely to hire you).

* Set up the coaching relationship right from the beginning
to keep your clients working with you for years (so that
your clients change their lives in BIG ways, become raving
fans who refer other potential clients to you, and this
also creates a more steady, consistent income for you).

* Uncover the secret dreams, desires, pains, and problems of
potential clients, so they can tell how your coaching will
make a difference in their lives that is worth paying for!

More Intro. Sessions = More Coaching Clients

We thank Christian Mickelsen for his blog contribution. You can hear more from Christian during the 2nd Annual IACC Telesummit! Here's part one!

You might already know that the "Intro. session" (AKA free session)
is THE #1 way for you to get clients...

It's true because most, if not all, of your clients will come to you from
these sessions. And, if you don't haveenough coaching clients part
of the reason is because you aren't getting enough people having
intro. sessions with you. In fact...

The # of clients you have is mostly determined by 3 things:

1. how many free sessions you do each month.
2. how long your clients stick around.
3. how good you are at converting people from the intro. sessions into
hiring you for coaching.

If you improve any of these areas your coaching business will
grow! If you improve all 3, you're business will soar!

Here are 5 things you can do to start getting a lot more intro. sessions
and a lot more clients.

1) Send out an offer for a free coaching session
to your newsletter list. Where most coaches
go wrong on this idea is that they put the offer
deep into their newsletter and only a few people
will see it there. Instead, send out a single
newsletter/email specifically about the session
you're offering!

2) Grow your newsletter list of subscribers. This
is where you'll stay in touch with your potential
clients and can make offers of a free session from
time to time. Where coaches go wrong here is by not
picking a target audience/niche. They end up writing
about general "stuff" that can help anyone, but does not
capture the hearts and minds of people the way having
one specific group will. The result, few people will
actually ever read your newsletters on a regular basis
from beginning to end and pass it on to others.

3. Build a case for why someone should spend their time
and energy having a free session with you. This is how
most coaches describe their free session offer (poorly):

"I offer a free exploratory coaching session. If you would like to see if
coaching is right for you, call XXXX or email YYY".

Just because something is "free" doesn't mean people
will want it. Like most everything else in life, the "free
session" needs to be "sold". Write up some compelling
reasons people should have a session with you and the
real tangible benefits people will leave the session with.

4. Tell people that you want to work with them. When you
come across people that you think would be great to
work with, let them know "I'd like to coach you". Most
of the time they'll be flattered. Compliment them by
telling them why you'd like to work with them. "You
have great energy and I'd love to watch you get into
full bloom" or "After hearing you speak, your passion
got me inspired and I'd like to help you make your
vision come true". Most people will be open to having
a free session with you to see if it makes sense for them.

5. Go for the "easy yes" before offering the intro. session.
Many coaches don't realize how important these intro.
sessions are. But, once they do, they start offering these
sessions to strangers they meet at networking events.
Now, this CAN be effective. But, you'll miss out on
connecting with MOST people and building a relationship
that could later lead to a free session and hiring you. Instead
offer a "Special Report", tele-class, or audio program on a topic
that is of extreme interest to the people you're networking with.
More people will say "yes, I want that" and you'll be able to
stay in touch with them sending your "articles/newsletters"
and later offering the free session.

6. Demonstrate your value proactively when annual review time comes.
Rather than relying on vague statements about feeling like you’ve improved over the past 12 months, keep a record (file, folder, or computer document) of your accomplishments during the year. You can use these both to support a request for a promotion or raise at annual review AND to keep your resume current in case a new job opportunity comes along.
