What IS Career Coaching?

Career coaching is a specific way of working with people – over the phone or, if you prefer, in person – to help them discover what would most fulfill them and creating the path to get there.  They may be in job transition, or they may simply be unhappy in their current position.  You learn to help by asking coaching questions, providing feedback, helping them stretch beyond what they thought was possible, and keeping them accountable on the path to their goal – including overcoming any barriers that may arise.

You will need to possess three types of traits to be successful as a career coach:

• Excellent ability to communicate. You must be able to listen well, build rapport, and observe strengths and obstacles in clients, and bve able to communicate in a positve yet firm way.
• The entrepreneurial personality (assuming you are seeking to start or expand your own business). This includes being achievement oriented, able to work independently and be self-directed, and to follow through on your goals – even when it gets challenging!
• Business management skills such as the key elements of a web site, marketing principles, bookkeeping basics for entrepreneurs, sales, finance, business and strategic planning, and the like.  (These can be learned through some of our bonus training too.)

The Skills and Expertise You Will Gain

We know from experience that there are four primary areas you must master if you are to become a skilled career coach.  And our materials address each of these areas.

1. Part One of the Training --The Practice of Career Coaching:  First, you need to understand the industry of coaching, and career coaching in particular.  And that includes the ethics of coaching -- all of this is covered in Part 1.

Part Two of the Training --Authentic Vocation Model of Career Design: Next, you need to have a template to use with clients to help them design a job and/or career that will be both fulfilling and financially rewarding.  We help you understand and learn to use the 8-part Authentic Vocation™ Model of Career Development.  It not only helps the client with his/her job choice, but with his/her overall purpose in life.  The model has been proven over 20+ years and is highly effective with all types of career coaching clients -- especially those in midlife or mid-career! 
   
3. Part Three of the Training --QuantumShift! Coaching: Now that you know the elements of an ideal job or career, how do you facilitate the client's discovery of it?  That's where our trademarked QuantumShift!™ Coaching comes in.  Incorporating all 70 of the ICF core coaching competencies, you learn a simple -- but not necessarily easy! -- 3-step model and the 3 levels of coaching that are available.  Powerful questions, listening techniques, feedback, modeling, keeping clients accountable while being supportive, and more are included in Part 3. 
   
4. Part Four of the Training -- Job Search Mechanics: And finally, in Part 4, you discover how to coach clients on all aspects of their job search.  From resumes to networking, interviewing skills to negotiating, and what proportion of unpublished vs. published job leads the client should use -- you learn it all here.  You’ll even get insight into how to use LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace – as well as personal branding – to help your clients get the job they want!Your Certified Career Coach (CCC) program includes in-depth training in all four of these areas.  You can choose a completely self-paced home study version or the complete version with teleclasses and bonus training.

How Our Program Works

Our program is self-paced, in that you set the rate at which you complete the live and online components.  There is no expiration date for completion or for certification. You simply follow the steps below to progress through your training:

1. Enroll in the program online or by submitting an enrollment form by fax or email.
2. Receive your welcome email which will include everything you need to know as a student, including your access code to the Career Coaching Success Center so you can have instant access to a wealth of resources you can use immediately with your clients.
3. Receive your Career Coaching Success System kit including the book Career Coaching An Insider’s Guide, Study Guide and begin reading them and doing the exercises in the Study Guide, listening to the Audio Lectures by the author, and listening to the Coaching Demonstrations.
4. Register to take Core Career Coaching teleclass (classes delivered by conference call) and spend 12 weeks learning coaching skills, career design strategies, and job search/job market knowledge so that you can work with clients on a variety of work related issues.
5. View the 27 e-modules as you go through each chapter.
6. Take the quiz for each chapter online at your convenience. 
7. Then, when you are ready, take the Final Exam online.  The exam takes about 60-90 minutes.
8. Coach clients for a total of 50 hours (this can be pro bono aka free) and collect a Feedback Form from each. (This is a sort of “internship” that builds your coaching confidence!)
9. Submit your Certification Application and feedback forms from practice clients for staff review.  Receive your certification as a Certified Career Coach (CCC).  Three years of certification is included with your tuition. (See certification requirements.)
